For the first time in several years, I day-tripped Barleycorn.    Not even because of the DepressiHurriStorm forecast -- if circumstances had been otherwise, I'd have felt BETTER being further inland.      I spent Friday and part of Saturday morning bagging up possessions in preparation for the landlord's promised Great Kafka Hunt.     Losing a bunch of non-paying "guests" whom I must frequenly stomp will be a relief.

The rain held off until mid- to- late afternoon, but the humidity was --Bleah--impressive.       The site looked nice as always -- the owners refurbish more of the camp every summer and Barleycorn has been reaping those benefits.        I enjoyed the abundance of green stuff offered by dayboard   (broccoli and green beans and asparagus and pesto, oh my!)  and did a very little bit of percussion for day dancing with [livejournal.com profile] shalmestere  and  [livejournal.com profile] hudebnik , then tuned up the guitar and rehearsed a couple of songs with the Sing Thing group and with FrauB.    The one mistake I made was leaving my umbrellas in the car, so I had to borrow FrauB's to retrieve the others.     With the umbrellas, I arrived at court ONLY drenched from the waist down    8)

We got to sing a little bit before court started (I'm VERY much in favor of  "close-up" pre-court entertainment), and got to see several friends receive Provincial and Kingdom cookies.

Then the herald summoned "Judith the Confused".

There IS a Judith the Confused, who lives in Bhakail.      Although I've never met her, I was once told we might even bear a passing resemblance to one another.    It DID confuse me.    Then the King  waved his hand in my direction and said "I can see her--she's right there."

Oh.

I said,  "I'm not Confused--I'm Uncertain.     Your Majesty, Sir."

Having sorted that out, I came up and knelt.      Her Majesty told me that a  Golden Lyre favor had been made since her presentation during the State Dinner at Pennsic.     She made it herself, in her copious free time.     I was stunned and touched.      It's beautiful.      I started to try to put it on my belt but heard a Voice of Reason   (Hi Boss  ::::waves::::) through my euphoria, reminding me the dress was too wet for safety.     The favor made it home safe and dry.

After   Court I had to go to work.       My second mistake was leaving too much of my stuff in the pavilion, hoping either that I had everything I most needed or that there might be a handy break in the rain.      Feast had a couple of highlights (I seldom turn down this cook's bacon-wrapped chicken livers 8), and there was a fair amount of public activity (toasts and tourney results and such) before we started performing.      Frau B did her Master El piece for a new audience, then came back later (with moral support) to sing/lead "Bring Us In Good Ale".      The newest members of the Order of the Terpsichore exhibited the Italian dance Gracca Amoroso to recorder accompaniment.     An Amnesiac lady (by name and nature 8), who is soon to relocate to Meridies, begged leave to share a filk composition by her own hand.   Since the Province isn't likely to have another chance to hear her sing any time soon, I put her on the roster and she sang/led "Take Me Home, Currie Road".

Three Sing Thing singers  performed "Watkins Ale" by the seat of our collective pants.     Welcome to the "proud" SCA tradition of wishing we had another week's rehearsal.     Our Viceroy observed that the solo verses underscored our three very different realms of musical experience, namely Musical Theatre (his wife), street performance (Hi :::waves:::) and opera (fearless leader).   I'd discovered during the day that the boyfriend our fearless leader referred to several weeks ago turned out to be none other than [info]bytchearse !       I'm happy for both of them.     At one point she did lament,   "Everybody already knows my boyfriend!" but I pointed out that THIS boyfriend has already been "vetted", which is nothing to sneeze at   8)

If this audience's reaction is typical, those two Fools of Gotham stories I performed  need...something...or maybe they need something removed.     The improvised "simple country knight" reference might have confused people after it momentarily made them laugh.

After dinner there was dancing, and the dance music we'd rehearsed.     Mostly.    I discovered my zills, bells and my capo were down in the pavilion where they were going to stay unless the rain abated a LOT.    Fortunately there were enough other instruments to go around.     The dancers had a good time.      By the time the dancing was over, the rain HAD lessened enough to gather up stuff and load the car for the dry drive home.

It was a long drive -- my car is waiting for a replacement part and I'm not currently driving at full highway speed.      I do love being able to make that drive, whatever the conditions.

On the seventh day, I rested    8)        My co-worker who covers the weekends announced today (by phone) that she wants to begin taking every other Sunday off.     Starting with next Sunday  (my only free Sunday for the next, umm, four weeks).     I am not available, but it's financially prudent to at least make myself available for one Sunday a month, starting in October.   Since the Sundays I may have plans are different every month, I'm sure I will almost immediately become uncomfortably aware of how inconvenient this new scheduling factor will be  8P
